Interior decorator Val Taylor loves three things her fiancé, her seven-year-old-son and houses with character. Soon after she marries Nathan, a man who hopes to be as good a father as he is husband, he falls down a flight of stairs. As Nathan recovers physically, it becomes apparent that he is no longer the same man.

On impulse, he brings home a puppy even though their landlord doesn't allow pets. Then he buys a 1920's fixer-upper they cannot afford. Together they try to repair their once grand home as they struggle to rebuild their relationship.

When Val’s husband changes into someone completely different, how long should she wait for her true love to return? What if he never does?

I read this book as an insider looking out. I too have serious damage to my right frontal lobe from a stroke. I struggle with migraines and the consequences of fibromyalgia and a best friend is in the advanced stages of lupus, now with lesions on her brain. I don't usually broadcast these facts, believe me, but wanted potential readers of this critique to understand my particular interest in how an outsider would describe these situations. I was disappointed to find the treatment shallow at best. The counselor finally suggests that Nate carry a notebook. What about first relearning how to read and write? Not recognizing people you've known for years? Seizures? Days of missing the old you so much that you cry for all that is gone and will never read again? I realize that every brain injury manifests differently, but I was hoping for a sensitive treatment of the general subject that would be helpful to people who say, "Wow, you look great! You must be doing much better!" Instead we have a confusing bit of fiction in which both partners dwelled in denial and made a series of irresponsible decisions. It was hard to care for either MC. I'm sorry. I'd hoped for so much more than a quirky little story that dawdled along without any swell and flow to the plot.

Then there's the cover. I love stories involving animals. The dog was just there, playing no significant role at all.

On the Verge Sisters Series Book 3 edition by Karen Lenfestey Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Karen Lenfesty explored the world of a young woman entering a second marriage with a man who wants to be in her life. He even accepts her son with his learning issues and is eager to help with school issues. He is the perfect fit for this family until the accident and the neurological changes that result. Should this wife, mother, employee, daughter-in-law, and new home owner struggle to keep her life on track? Or would it be better to derail all her plans and expectations because her life hasn't turned out the way she planned? She deals fairly with her characters giving us a great story with a satisfactory conclusion. I love her style as a writer and eagery await her next book.
I really enjoyed this book, it is a good story with some nice twists and turns. The characters were well developed and likeable. I especially liked the way it ended, would like to read how things go in the future.
While I liked most of this book's plot and the writing was pretty decent, I found the depth of the characters somewhat disheartening. Not that women are perfect, but the physical therapist who is so desperate to have a man that she basically stalks him? And the "fat" girl who risks her life to try and lose weight for her wedding? Also, the woman who feels guilty because her husband was doing "her" work by helping with the laundry when he had his accident? Really? Not a very feminist take on life.
This was the 3rd book in a series, all three were great reads... I recommend reading them all in order and I hope there are more to come in this series... I'm left wondering what happened to Bobby.... but would like to hear more about the New characters in this book, Val, Nathan, and Chip.
well worth the purchase and as a fibromyalgia warrior, I can so relate to the character Joely....
I really enjoyed reading this final book in the series. I wish that there would have been more of Kate in this final book of the series, but overall it was truly was a great read.
Val thought she had the future mapped out for her son and herself. Nathan was sweet, kind, thoughtful, and he accepted Chip as his own. They married and Nathan even accepted the loss of their honeymoon because of Chip's problems at school. Nathan was just perfect. Then he fell down the stairs. The head injury made Nathan a different person. He didn't even want to be called Nathan anymore. Now he's Nate. And Nate can't hold down a job and hangs out at bars. Do they still have a great future together? Or any future together, at all? Is the man Val fell in love with still in there?

This was a thoughtful book and very moving. What do we do when bad things happen to the people we love? That's a question many of us will have to answer at various stages of our lives. I really liked this book. It is the third book in a series and the first book I have read by this author. I searched on my tablet and found that I also have the first book of the series. I put it in my queue and am looking forward to reading it. Try this book. If you like books about believable people with faults and problems, you will love this book.
A excellent story. This story of Val a single mother and Nathan Sullivan shows the terribly tragic after effects from a traumatic brain injury. Falling down the stairs of their duplex, Nathan recovers but has trouble with everyday decisions. Val and Chip her 7 year old son are trying to find their way through Nathan's increasingly sudden outbursts and strange behavior. Nathan purchases an older historic home that needs expensive repairs, but they have no money to pay for the repairs. Also Val's best friend Joley is having more health problems with her Lupus disease and the father of her child who now after years decides he wants to marry her after all. This story has so many emotional decisions for the characters to make that you will be turning the pages until the end.
