What was once the Peradaini Empire is now a wasted landscape of burned, empty cities and abandoned farmlands. The Blessing, now more numerous than ever, continues to spread across the continent, driving refugees to the dubious safety of the city walls. Unharvested crops mean that few strongholds have enough provisions to last the winter, although most know the grunts will take them before starvation will.

But hope survives. A piece of stolen magic just might halt the spread of The Blessing if Tejohn and Cazia can find a scholar with the skill to re-create the spell. If such a person still lives.

Unfortunately they are nearly out of time. The few remaining human enclaves are isolated and under siege. Worse, The Blessing has spread to other sentient creatures. If Cazia and Tejohn are going to strike back at their monstrous enemy, they cannot delay.

And there's another deeper question left unaddressed Where did The Blessing come from, and why have they invaded Kal-Maddum?

The Way into Darkness is the final book in The Great Way series.

Author Harry Connolly's first book, Child of Fire, was listed in Publishers Weekly's Best 100 Books of 2009.

I just finished the fantasy trilogy "The Great Way" by Harry Connolly. Holly cow. What a fabulous series of books.

I'm so lucky to have stumbled on this series after the author had written and released all three books.

When (if) you start the first book you may feel a little lost because it immediately throws you into a new world very different from our own. A world filled with unusual magic, unique customs, sudden battle, historical military terms, strange lands, fantastical creatures, non-stop action, and breath-taking events. And the books don't stop to explain everything to you. You have to learn and understand as you go. But within a couple of chapters you are completely hooked and enveloped by this unique world, and what seemed strange at first becomes accepted and understood. Excellent world building!

The plot never disappoints. It is a series of sudden world changing events, moments of great danger, unexpected losses and a few gains, deep observations and attempts by the characters to understand and adjust to what is happening, and several hair raising escapes from death or fates worse than death. Never a dull moment that's for sure.

The series is told from the points of view of the two main characters: a middle aged soldier with years of experience and a troubled and weary soul, and a very young girl filled with magic and reckless bravery. The adventures these two characters go thru, both apart and together, are amazing. You come to love these two people, their deficiencies, their triumphs, their fears, their moments of indecision and then their determination to carry on even under the threat of certain death. It's a thrill to see both persons mature and lose their prejudices, to expand their capabilities, and to make a huge impact on their beleaguered world.

It's so difficult to describe this unique series. In some ways the series reminded me of a combination of the fantastical science fiction of the old John Carter of Mars books with its daring-do and formal speech, a flavoring of a very grown-up version of the Wizard of Oz with each unique creature that is encountered, a sprinkling of the journey-adventures of Tolkien, a softer (though just as bloody) version of the politics of The Game of Thrones, and (would you believe) some of the terror of The Walking Dead. As you can see, a very different set of books which are delightfully hard to explain. And damn good.

There is a lot of death and destruction and sadness in these books, but also great battles, heroic actions, and wonderful friendships formed thru shared adversities, slowly built admiration, and finally strong pride and affection.

My only complaint was when the books were complete. I didn't want the series to end!

I heartily recommend this series. Five stars! Kudos to Mr. Connolly!

The Way into Darkness The Great Way Book 3 (Audible Audio Edition) Harry Connolly Michael Kramer Podium Publishing Books Reviews

Humans get magical abilities from other-dimensioned creatures whom they must periodically entertain. Feudal fighting and politics, adventures involving strange creatures, sorcerers gone bad-- Connolly's trilogy is like the old-time movie cliffhangers, never a dull moment. In this last of the series, all ends more or less satisfactorily, although a bit melodramatically. I got the sense Connolly was straining for new plot gimmicks. I won't give away any more plot details so as not to spoil it for other readers. It's a satisfying sword-and-sorcery trilogy, good writing and creative ideas but didn't have to be three books long.
Harry Connolly has a nice, exciting trilogy with magic coming from portals in The Great Way. Many intelligent species have made their way to that world, including humans. One portal opens in the Palace of Song and Morning every twenty-three years bring the Evening People, humanoid aliens who gift one spell if they are properly regaled. This time giant purple apes come pouring out of the portal. The Way Into Chaos (ebook from Radar Avenue Press which I bought) starts with the destruction of the capital by these monsters Tyr Tejohn Treygar, the only landless Tyr watches the king and Queen killed, but gets the prince and his entourage onto a flying cart. Lar, the prince wants them to head to his uncle’s tower where the magician has a spell that could win the day. Alas, the prince is bitten and, like all those bitten, becomes a monster himself. Cazia Freewell, royal hostage whose been taught magic is along. They run into Giant Eagles and their cart is destroyed. Tejohn decides to continue Lar’s quest and sends Cazia with Ivy, Lar’s future wife to Ivy’s home. But Cazia decides instead to investigate the Eagles home, which may be another portal. She, Ivy, and another girl head toward the mountains. Cazia has to tunnel through the mountains with magic and finds herself hollowed out by the excess use. In the valley between the mountains the girls discover intelligent insects with a anti-magic stone that removes Cazia’s magic and restores her to herself. This is The Way into Magic (ebook) but first the girls have to escape the insect Queen. Tejohn on foot, finds the empire in ruins with petty Tyr’s running things and not offering much of a defense to their people. Turned into a slave, he has to escape and save several communities. The Cazia and Tejohn reunite to go to Lar’s uncle’s tower only to discover that Lar’s uncle had gone hollow and was killing everyone that got close to him. The Way into Darkness (ebook) is an exciting conclusion that first send Cazia to the land she was born in, only to find her father has been horrible to his people. Then the two face the aliens who were responsible for the curse. This tale is pulse-pounding and impossible to put down. Review printed by Philadelphia Weekly Press
